Reasons I love Terracotta

You may have noticed that 90% of my plants live in terracotta pots. This decision did not happen overnight…okay well, maybe it did. A few years ago, I was not at all on the terracotta pot train. I thought they were ugly…Oh young Erikka, you had so much to learn, you silly girl. I spent a lot of money on glazed pots with beautiful patterns before I began to realize the benefits terracotta pots could offer my plants. My interior design style also had a lot to do with my decision to switch. Today, I only buy terracotta and white cover pots for my plants. Here are three reasons you may be inclined to bring more terracotta into your home.

1. They are cheaper than any other style, apart from plastic. If you have a lot of plants, that means you will need a lot of pots. At this point, you will most likely be paying closer attention to the price tags & scoping out ways to save a dollar. I have found them decently priced at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart & Amazon. They are the best-priced pot in my opinion.
2. They can breathe. Terracotta pots are porous and will absorb any excess water & minerals! This makes a great home for succulents who don’t like to sit in water long. Also, if you like to water your plants, I highly recommend terracotta. They make it easier to tell if your plants need to be watered because of the color. They are darker when moisture is present and lighter when dry.
If you use tap water for your plants, these pots will also absorb the minerals too, adding some discoloration to the outside of the pot. This film is called patina. If you don’t like it, you can combine vinegar & water & then scrub to remove the patina.

3. They add style to your home. Plants in terracotta pots are the perfect minimalistic décor to add an organic feel to your home. The pots also compliment the foliage. Who knew green and orange could be so beautiful? As I stated earlier, they patina well & this could add a rustic/antique vibe to your home.
